Education Work

Luke is an experienced workshop leader, working with Key Stages One, Two, Three and Four, as well as adult groups.

Workshops range from 60 minutes to longer projects that take place over a number of weeks. Luke’s own work is based around themes such as Identity, urban life and modern culture. Thematically, the workshop is usually led by the students, but Luke is happy to accommodate any relevant themes relating to syllabus or coursework.

Students are encouraged to look at metre, rhyme, form, story-telling techniques, imagery and metaphor.  They are given simple writing exercises to help them come up with content. Workshops can incorporate performance time at the end of the session where the basics of stage performance are discussed. However, the focus is, as it should be, primarily on writing.

Luke currently has live stage show for ages 14+. Luke Wight Is Not On The GCSE Syllabus is a sideways look at the noble art interspersed with his trademark blistering verse. The show has been to over 30 secondary schools to much acclaim.

Luke has worked for agencies such as Apples & Snakes, Arvon and Creative Partnerships, and directly with hundreds of schools, from Eton College to Jurby Primary School on the Isle of Man. Excellent references are available on request.

“Luke Wright is everything a visiting writer should be. He smashes down students’ preconceptions about poetry as boring or irrelevant with a performance that is both thought provoking and very funny.” Jonathan Newton, Eton College

Currently Luke offers the following Education packages

1. Luke Wright Is Not On The GCSE Syllabus (half day session)
The day begins with a 45 minute performance by Luke followed by a Q&A (no longer than 15 mins). The show is suitable for years 10 and upwards (ideally, though some schools are happy for year 9 to be present) and can be performed to a whole year group or more (as many students as you can fit in your school hall). The show is then followed by a workshop for up to 20 students, this lasts an hour.

2. Luke Wright Is Not On The GCSE Syllabus (full day session)

Show as above. Luke then offers 2 x 2 hour workshops for two groups of up to twenty students, or 1 x 4 hour workshop for a group of up to 20 students. 4 x 1 hour workshops also a possibility but not recommended.

3. Full Day Workshop

As above but without the show. Sessions can be arranged as fits your school timetable.  However, Luke will not do five of the same workshop in a row as the students don’t get very much out of it (especially given that many of them will never have experienced live poetry before) and it drives Luke mad.

Luke is available for school’s booking throughout the UK and worldwide. For further information contact Mike McCarthy of Lakin McCarthy Entertainment +44 (0)114 2680243 | mike@varietylives.com
